LA NUIT AUX 1000 OREILLES
By Constantinople and Savina Yannatou
MUSIC AND POETRY / MONTRÉAL AND GREECE
Among the hundred or so poetic fragments that have resisted the ravages of time is this phrase: “I think that in other ages, someone will remember us.” This echo fired the imagination of Constantinople, a prolific Montréal-based ensemble. Thus was born, in a burst of inspiration, La Nuit aux 1000 Oreilles.
Since none of Sappho’s musical compositions remain, Constantinople and guests embarked on an imaginative reconstruction of her verse about love, desire, the female body, marriage, exile, Aphrodite and Eros. Like restoring a shattered fresco, the six musicians fill in the gaps with improvisations and compositions for Persian instruments (setar, santûr, tombak), viola d’amore, bass clarinet and percussion. The amorous, sensual and timeless voice of Sappho is conveyed by the Greek singer Savina Yannatou. With a discography of fifteen or so albums and a great number of collaborations, she is among the leading figures of Mediterranean song. How can one not hope that the tribute may travel upstream through a secular night to reach the poetess herself?
EMBUSCADES ET PRIVILÈGES
Les Souffleurs commandos poétiques
POETRY / FRANCE
For over 10 years, Les Souffleurs commandos poétiques have gathered in an “Attempt to Slowdown the World.” They invent a set of gestures, works, installations, writings, performances, contaminating processes, and views around a “speed thought” and are animated by the firm belief in the urgency, for Western society, to reintroduce duration into time. With the provocative posture of tenderness, Les Souffleurs whisper poetic secrets using long hollow canes (the “nightingales”).
Round a table or behind a ledge, they distill their stunning interventions in the the ears of a privileged few. In different places and moments of our Nuit des murmures, let yourself be taken by surprise, alone or in a small group, by the poetic murmurs of our discriminating commandos. When you least expect it, they will whisper their most beautiful verse. Let yourself be taken by surprise!
