Lori Freedman

Souvent qualifiée de «révolutionnaire musicale», Lori Freedman est reconnue mondialement parmi les interprètes les plus créatives et provocantes. Active en musique contemporaine, improvisée et électroacoustique, elle collabore régulièrement avec des artistes du monde de la danse, du théâtre et des arts visuels.

Plus de 45 compositeurs lui ont écrit des solos de clarinette basse. On peut l’entendre sur 28 disques compacts, dont les plus récents sont Bridge (CQB 0909), performance solo comme interprète, improvisatrice, compositrice; Plumb avec le tromboniste Scott Thompson (Barnyard Records); 3, des trios montréalais (Ambiances Magnétiques)…

En 1998, elle recevait le prestigieux prix Freddie Stone pour «avoir fait preuve d’un leadership, d’une intégrité et d’une excellence remarquables en musique contemporaine et en jazz». De plus, elle a été trois fois finaliste aux National Jazz Awards, dans la catégorie «Clarinettiste de l’année» (2003, 2004, 2006).

Depuis 1981, Freedman a collaboré avec une brochette éclectique de musiciens, dont les Canadiens John Oswald, Ana Sokolović, Bernard Falaise, Martin Tétreault, Jean Derome, René Lussier et Diane Labrosse. Sur la scène internationale, elle a travaillé avec Toru Takemitsu, Iva Bittova, Helmut Lachenmann, Joëlle Léandre, Mauricio Kagel, Steve Lacy, George Lewis, Frances Marie Uitti, Misha Mengelberg, Evan Parker, Mark Dresser, Susie Ibarra, Fred Frith, Ab Baars, Joe McPhee et Barry Guy.

Récemment, elle s’impliquait surtout dans deux collaborations impliquant des électroniques avec Monique Jean (Montréal) et Giorgio Magnanensi (Vancouver), en plus d’une résidence de composition à la Leighton Artist Colony du Banff Centre for the Arts.

En solo, elle a donné plusieurs prestations d’envergure: Échange de Iannis Xenakis à Toronto (au festival SoundaXis 2006 de New Music Concerts); Kya de Giacinto Scelsi à Paris (avec l’Ensemble 2e2m); Brief Candles et Xolf, ses propres compositions pour clarinette basse, à Zagreb, Bucarest, Vienne, Budapest, Vancouver, Rotterdam, Toronto et Guelp…

Grâce à une résidence de quatre mois à Paris, où Freedman a pu développé un nouveau répertoire de concert, s’ajoutent maintenant à ses activités: Brief Candles; un nouveau projet d’enregistrement solo mettant en vedette son nouveau répertoire et des improvisations; un concert solo soulignant son travail d’intégration composition-improvisation au Festival of Extraordinary Performers Solus (Vancouver) et à la Stanford University (Californie); la saison de concerts 2009-2010 du nouveau sextette de musique contemporaine sans chef Transmission (Montréal); enfin, Solor, un premier DVD solo illustrant son travail d’interprète et d’improvisatrice en musique contemporaine (parution prévue en 2011 chez Mode Records)…
